On the modeling of coastal flooding: some analytical and numerical solutions

Περίληψη:

In relation to the study of the evolution of coastal flooding, focus is given to the role of impulsive waves and their potential impact of coasts. An analysis is proposed largely based on use of analytical and numerical solutions developed by the UNIVPM Hydraulics research group.

Starting from the setup of the Nonlinear Shallow Water Equations (NSWE) framework, an assessment of the Initial Value vs Boundary Value Problem is given, followed by the description of some applications and the proposal of a new set of Dispersive NSWE.

Numerical solvers for the NSWE and DNSWE are also briefly described, by highlighting some similarities and differences with Boussinesq-type solutions. Finally, a quasi-3D model is described, its performances being evaluated in relation to both impulsive and periodic waves.

Applications are also shown, of a recent simplified approach that blends analytical and numerical techniques to provide information of tsunami impacts on large regions of coastline with a relatively small numerical effort. A modeling chain approach is used to enable use of wave information typically employed in tsunamis warning procedures, then propagated inshore by means of an analytical method based on an extension of Green’s law and subsequently by means of high-resolution numerical solutions, this giving a fairly accurate description of the flooded areas.
